"Easy Ed" Award Nomination Procedures

The "Easy Ed" award is presented annually to a Central Virginia Football Official Association (CVFOA) member in remembrance of the former CVFOA official Ed Thornton. The name of the award is representative of the way Ed lived his life and officiated games, always remembering that the game is for the participants. The award is cherished by all those who have received it and remains a goal for all those who have not. It is significant in that it represents the importance of being an all around member. That includes knowing the rules, being a solid official, enjoying the game, and giving back to the association and its members. Each year the association goes through a selection process that proceeds as follows:

  • Each class leader will go through open nominations. The class members will nominate qualified individuals from each position other than their own.
  • After nominations, the class members will vote on the nominees and come up with two names per position (other than their own).
  • The class leader will total the votes and record the two names per position with the most votes.
  • The names are presented to the Awards Committee.
  • The Awards Committee will tally all the names and votes and determine a winner.
  • The award is presented at the Annual Meeting at the end of the year.

The qualifications that should be used when nominating individuals for this award are as follows:

  • Minimum of 5 years in the association.
  • Not a previous winner of the award.
  • Has a good knowledge of the rules of the game.
  • Willfully accepts assignments without complaints.
  • Punctual to all game assignments.
  • Helpful to all fellow officials and is especially interested in helping and developing new officials.
  • Hustles and works hard during all games regardless of the level or situation.
  • Gives back to the association by serving on committees, helping with the training class, serving on the board or acting as a class leader.
  • Has a good attitude and disposition during all activities and presents a positive role model to the youth we come into contact with.
  • Has the respect of his fellow officials and is genuinely fun to work with.
